Hi! I'm Jessica.
I’m a teacher, writer, and social scientist who loves walking around the city with my camera.
Let me tell you a little more about my background...
Fear of the blank page arises from the belief that you have to start with the first sentence.
Why did I create this website?
Everyone has a voice…and it should be heard!
Research is fundamentally important, but it can seem like a huge hurdle to publish results so that others can benefit from our work. Let me tell about you my vision...
Being a scientist is hard.
Writing is hard.
Why am I qualified?
First, I am passionate about writing. But more importantly, I have more than two decades of training and experience as a researcher including as an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore. Check out highlights below.
Highlights
I have a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in writing. This is my foundation.
Professionally, I am trained as a landscape architect with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. My graduate thesis was research-based. I was awarded a research grant based on my research proposal, and I published two papers from that project.
I went on to complete a PhD in Health & Behavioral Science funded through a National Science Foundation Grant. I was also awarded a Fulbright scholarship for my dissertation fieldwork.
I worked for 7 years at NUS as an Assistant Professor. I designed/taught 9 modules, have published 24 papers (and counting), and worked on 3 multi-year research projects. I have presented 36 papers at international conferences and published a single-authored and a co-edited book. I have peer reviewed manuscripts for more than 30 academic journals.
I have mentored 33 graduate students (including 3 doctoral students) as a research supervisor and co-authored 14 papers with them.
I am currently pursuing socio-ecological projects including a book publication, photo-narratives of urban space conditions, and re-patriating to the United States after living, working, and conducting research on urban-periurban food systems for 12 years in India, Singapore, and Southeast Asia.
