WEEK ZERO
Getting Started & Writing Blocks
In this preliminary tutorial, I introduce myself, provide an overview of the workshop, give tips on preparing your writing spot, discuss writing blocks, and encourage you to create a writing plan.
WEEK ONE
The Abstract
In this first week, we tackle the abstract: your road map to writing your journal paper. The abstract is a brief but comprehensive summary of your research paper.
WEEK TWO
Core Argument
In week 2, you articulate your core argument. The focus is on being explicit about the purpose of your paper—your important idea. This is the single most important task needed to organize your paper.
WEEK THREE
Structure
In week 3, we dive into a major hurdle in writing a publishable paper, which is building structure. This week lays the foundation for the remainder of the course.
WEEKS FOUR & FIVE
Literature Review
Probably the most difficult section to write, we dedicate weeks 4 and 5 to the introduction and literature review. The aim is to engage the discourse as it relates to your core argument.
WEEKS SIX TO EIGHT
Methods, Results & Discussion
In weeks 6 through 8, we cover: the methods, results and discussion sections! While each is a discrete section, they function as a triad linking the evidence and core argument in complementary ways.
WEEK NINE
Conclusion
The conclusion is a short 1-2 paragraph standalone section that brings coherence to the entire paper and gives readers a concise takeaway. Nothing new is introduced; the aim is to reconnect your research to the broader discourse.
WEEK TEN
Opening & Closing
The focus of this final week is to review, revise, and finalize your draft. This tutorial ends with suggestions for next steps to self-revise, get feedback from others, and plan for submission!
